Batch Tracking & Traceability: A Guide for Quality Control

In manufacturing, especially for food, cosmetics, chemicals, or electronics, a simple inventory count isn't enough. You don't just need to know that you have 100 bottles of shampoo; you need to know exactly which batch of chemicals went into those specific bottles and when they expire.

This is where batch tracking (or lot tracking) and traceability become essential.

What is Batch Tracking?

Batch tracking assigns a unique identification number (a batch or lot number) to a specific group of products that were manufactured together using the same raw materials and production processes.

If you buy 500kg of flour in January and another 500kg in February, batch tracking ensures you know exactly which bags belong to the January lot and which belong to the February lot, even if they share the same SKU.

Imagine a supplier notifies you that a shipment of raw materials you received last month was contaminated. Without batch tracking, you might have to recall every single product you've manufactured since then. 2. Expiry Date Management (FEFO)

For perishable goods, knowing what you have isn't enough; you must know when it goes bad. Batch tracking enables First-Expired, First-Out (FEFO) inventory management.
